4ply makes lightweight, finely defined socks — great for snug, breathable everyday wear and detailed colourwork. DK makes thicker, quicker-to-knit socks — cushioned, more durable, better for cool weather or active use. Choose by needle size, stitch pattern and wearer: 4ply on smaller needles suits lace and tiny cables; DK on larger needles suits textured stitches and a plusher drape. In both cases swatch for gauge, and use mostly natural fibres with some nylon for strength to get comfy, long-lasting socks.
